MPD-Multiple Personality Disorder..what is it?

MPD, hmm..i often accused some people of having it before 'cos they tend to act differently in different situations..but now that i know what the disorder is really like, i feel bad for having those thoughts before..I'm currently reading "Tell me Who I am before I Die" by Christina Peters, a true-life story told by Christina herself of how she discovered her true self only after 30 years of having to battle with 5 split personalities...This is much worse than Mr Jekyll n Mr Hyde im tellin u..
It's such a pity to read about her life since she was small,,she started having different personalities in her mind after she was raped by her own father. "Christina" 'died' at that moment..and from then on she continued to form more different personalities in her mind, each with its own strengths to cope with her troubles..Marie was the caring, loving person...Linda was the violent, alcoholic personality created in expression of her outrage towards the bad experiences she had to face, while Charlene was the strong person always emerged whenever she had to bear pain or suffering..
I'm halfway thru' the book so I havent discovered abt the other 2 personalities yet..These different people in one person, how do they emerge? Well, after "Christina" died, "Marie" was the dominant person, but she'd go into a blackout whenever any of the other personalities takes over her body..and she wouldn't know what she did after that up til Marie resurfaces..sometimes she'd beat up her own baby and wake from the 'black-out' not knowing what's happened to her bloody and battered baby..or one of her personalities would try to commit suicide, and Marie would wake up in hospital, not knowing why her cut up arms are all wrapped up...What a mess..
Her MPD was a result of her troubled family. She was an unwanted and unloved daughter.. their poverty not forgetting her own father's history of mental illness all took a toll on her, destroying her mind subconsciously.
Terrible innit? I never imagined having MPD is this horrifying..at least i hope this true story will help me be more sympathic towards people with mental illness like MPD..it's not as easy as we think it is for them..We should be grateful we don't have to face something like this..
